The International Thespian Society is a division of the Educational Theatre Association. Their mission is to honor student excellence in the theatrical arts. Induction into the Jr. Thespian Society means that a student has earned a membership in the theatre honor society, similar to National Junior Honor Society, but with an emphasis on Theatre Arts.
The Thespian Society has two branches, the Jr. Thespian Society, for middle school students, and the Thespian Society, for high school students. FMS, EVHS and GHS have active Thespian Troupes.
What does being inducted into the Jr. Thespian Troupe allow students to do at WMS?
They are invited to attend several professional shows per year in the Austin area as a group, with group rates for tickets. They are eligible to attend the Junior Thespian Convention each year. They participate in the show selection process for the upcoming school year. They are invited to monthly meetings where they give input on departmental events and activities.
When are students considered Jr. International Thespian Members?
Students are inducted when they earn 10 points by performing or working various production jobs. Every 1 point represents 5 hours of quality theatre work. Students can also earn points doing/seeing theatre outside of school! Blank forms that help students track their points are attached above. The point system outlining how much each job is also worth posted above.
Who is eligible to join thespian troupe?
All theatre students and those students who participate in any of the WMS productions in either a cast or crew capacity are eligible to be part of the Thespian Troupe and will begin earning points for eventual induction into the Thespian Society.
How does I become a member of the thespian troupe?
In order to be a member of the WMS Thespian Troupe, students must turn a completed points sheet page with 10 or more points AND pay their $15 dues. All of the $15 goes directly to the International Thespian Society to pay for their membership cards, certificates, additional materials and shipping costs.
Please email me if we need to discuss payment schedules or scholarship opportunities to cover your child's fees.
Are there leadership opportunities in the thespian troupe?
Yes! There are 5 officer positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian and Treasurer. Students will be voted into office, and will be in charge of meetings, running theatre events, and helping where they are needed.
